La
Plata-Dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei)
Length: 1,3 - 1,7 m | Weight: 30 - 50 kg
The La Plata-Dolphin is one of the smallest and
least known dolphin species. Although it belongs to the river dolphin family
the La Plata Dolphin lives in the coastal and shallow water areas along
the south-east of South America. Its most characteristic feature is the
long and slender beak and the broad and almost triangular flippers. His
coloration is grayish brown. Despite the limited number of observations
the La Plata Dolphin is usually a solitary animal, even if groups of up
to 5 animals have been recorded. Due to the high number of death animals
per year the La Plata Dolphin should be considered as endangered species. |
